Why are there so many who are attached to that which passes? Perhaps because that which passes is more immediately perceived and enjoyed than that which does not?
Biblical christians were convinced that the world would pass; they had the choice of stopping all activities arising from their passing world, and yet their teachers continued exhorting them to work and not to be lazy, to continue exercising their gifts and not be inoperative. And what was the motive behind this? That although the world of this aeon is passing away and a new one is coming, the child of God will do well to perform the task God has entrusted to him/her while this aeon remains. The idea is implicit in the parables of the faithful steward..."Who is the faithful steward? He whom the Master finds at work."

Justice and Peace should be the concern of every religious because it is the evangelical concern of the Church. What is the preaching of the gospel but the proclamation of Christ's peace and the restoration of right relationships among men ("justice" in the biblical language). And while it is true that the Church is still groping as to how it can go about the task of evangelization in a world that is wounded by injustice, no Christian, not even a religious, should laugh at the Church's efforts in the promotion of justice and peace, no matter how imperfect it may be. I am quite sure sooner or later, those who belittle this aspect of the Church's work will be asked to share in that work. And when they do, they'll realize how serious the work is.

Perhaps it is true that I am getting addicted to web site designing. I stayed up the whole night last night working on my own web graphics. I crawled into bed at around 4:00 AM and woke up sometime after 12 noon, and for the rest of the day, I was useless.
I am mystified by Adobe Photoshop. I have been working with it since the time I installed it a month ago, but I haven't yet mastered all the commands available in the software. Perhaps, that Graphics Experts from Xpertsite.com was right after all when he advised me to get a good book on the software. The problem is, the book costs a lot...

Today I gave my first lecture on the Internet and HTML. I thought it was fun sharing what I know about the topic. The lesson I gave was quite short, about 45 minutes, and included a 15 minute hands on session on the Internet. The two persons who heard my first lesson were teachers from the University of San Agustin high school. After the lesson, they treated me to merienda , I guess, for a job well done.

Jesus' attitude towards Jewish ascetic practices as expressed in Mark 2:18-22 puts a question even on our own attitude towards the legitimate pleasures of life. Why is it that a lot of our church-goers think that to be a serious Christian, one must look and act like an ascetic? The words of Jesus is disturbing: "...so long as the bridegroom is with them, they should not fast..." Isn't it that the presence of the Lord in the midst of his own should be an occassion of rejoicing, as in a wedding banquet? And yet, why is it that in our liturgical celebrations, there isn't much rejoicing and gladness?

Today I attended an In-service Training for Theology teachers. The paper read during the session was actually a report about a seminar held regarding "Popular Filipino Devotions and Religiosity." The paper is available through this link here.

James 5:9-12: An exhortation that members of religious communities should take into consideration
9 Do not grumble, brethren, against one another, that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the doors. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brethren, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we call those happy who were steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation.
Religious communities will be happier if the members stop bickering and concentrate on the work at hand. There is so much to do...!

I started packing my things today in view of my transfer to a different assignment. It is only now that I realize how much I have accumulated during my six year stay at the University of San Agustin, Iloilo. I don't have too many clothes or other equipments to carry... but I do have a lot of books that I'd wish to bring along with me... Man... the missionaries of olden times didn't have so many things to log around with them.
I started using my camera again today. I intend to take some pictures of the old place before I transfer to Bacolod. Perhaps, I will have some pictures scanned and posted here...
